If there's one part of pickleball worth putting real time into, it's the dink. The kitchen game is where most recreational players give up free points and where competitive players make their living. These five drills will get you uncomfortable in all the right ways.

1. Cross-court dink rally

Start here. Get to the kitchen line with a partner and rally cross-court, keeping the ball low and landing it inside the kitchen. Don't try to do too much. The goal is consistency. Ten minutes of this at the start of every session will do more for your game than most things.

2. Straight-ahead dink rally

Same idea, straight ahead. Mix it in with cross-court so you're building comfort at every angle. Real points rarely go in one direction.

3. Speed-up and reset

One player attacks with a speed-up. The other absorbs it and resets back to a soft dink. This builds one of the most important reflexes in competitive pickleball: the ability to take pace off the ball under pressure and immediately return to the slow game. It's harder than it sounds.

4. Mobility dinks

Move laterally along the kitchen line while keeping the rally going. Most people practice dinking from a fixed position, but in a real match you're constantly moving. This forces you to dink while off-balance and in motion, which is exactly what you need to be ready for.

5. Pressure dinking

One player actively tries to create errors by targeting the weaker side, moving the other person around the kitchen, and looking for chances to attack. The other player focuses on staying patient and consistent. Switch every two minutes. This one is uncomfortable, which means it's working.

Do these consistently and you'll improve faster than any amount of casual play. A paddle that rewards touch will make the difference more obvious. The Guard and Balance profiles are built for exactly this kind of game.
